Mirena IUD Complications and Symptoms

Posted February 11, 2019 | Personal Injury Blog

Mirena IUD Complications

The Mirena IUD (intrauterine device) is a type of long-term birth control doctors insert into the uterus. It is a small T-shaped plastic device. From its position in the uterus, the IUD continuously releases hormones to prevent pregnancy. It can continue to work for a maximum of five years. It has been available for women in the U.S. since its Food and Drug Administration approval in 2000. It is removable at any time. Unfortunately, complications with the Mirena IUD have led to many women suffering serious injuries, infections, and diseases.

Symptoms

Mirena IUD complications can range from the Mirena crash after IUD removal to IUD migration and perforation. Some women may experience complications even if the device works as intended, while others may suffer from dangerous situations due to IUD malfunctions. You may be experiencing a Mirena IUD complication if you experience any of the following symptoms during or after your time with the device.

  • Headaches
  • Irregular periods
  • Breast tenderness
  • Pelvic pain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Vaginitis
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Bacterial infections
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Severe mood swings
  • Exhaustion or fatigue

The Mirena crash may happen after IUD removal. The body adapts to a constant influx of levonorgestrel from the IUD, and after it is gone the body may not make its own as quickly as it used to. This can lead to serious side effects such as suicidal thoughts, flu-like symptoms, vomiting, painful sex, trouble concentrating, and changes in sleeping or eating patterns. Other symptoms may arise from Mirena IUD complications such as the device migrating throughout the body.

What Can You Do?

If you experience Mirena IUD complications, see your doctor right away. Explain that you believe it is your IUD causing the problems or symptoms. Request IUD removal as soon as possible, if it is still implanted. Keep a record of when you get your IUD removed, what your doctor said, and any treatment plans for Mirena IUD complications. Document your entire experience with the birth control device. Then, seek help from an attorney.

You may have a case against Mirena’s manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, if your device contained a defect that made it unreasonably dangerous for you to use. Bayer has faced lawsuits for Mirena IUD for life-threatening complications, including uterine perforation, pelvic inflammation, and ectopic pregnancies. It was Bayer’s responsibility to ensure the reasonable safety of the Mirena IUD before release.

Why Does It Occur?

Mirena IUD complications can arise due to defects in design, manufacture, or marketing. Design flaws in the device can lead to malfunctions such as the IUD breaking apart or migrating to other parts of the body. Many lawsuits allege that Bayer failed to warn patients of the known potential dangers of using the device. Bayer is currently facing thousands of lawsuits regarding Mirena IUD complications, injuries, and illnesses, all claiming the manufacturer should have done more to prevent the harm.

Product Liability

A Mirena IUD complication could result in a product liability claim if the manufacturer knew or reasonably should have known about the potential risks of a device, yet failed to warn consumers. The same is true if the company released a dangerously designed or otherwise defective product, whether the manufacturer was negligent or not. Strict liability laws hold product manufacturers liable for damages from defective devices regardless of negligence.

You have two years from the date of your injury – or the date you discover your injury – to file a product liability lawsuit in Utah. If your injury has to do with medical malpractice, such as incorrect implantation or retrieval procedures, you may have a medical malpractice claim instead of a case against Bayer. Either way, you must come forward with your claim within two years. Speak to a personal injury attorney in Salt Lake City about Mirena IUD complications as soon as you can. You may be eligible for compensation for your damages.
